Description: The Medical Assisting program prepares students for employment primarily in a medical office or clinic. PATIENT CARE ASSISTANT

The Patient Care Assistant program prepares students for employment as advanced cross-trained Patient Care Assistants, Nursing Aides and Orderlies, Home Health Aides, or Allied Health Assistants. This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills for both acute and long term care settings. Students will be skilled to work in nursing homes, home health agencies, and hospitals. Successful completion of this program will prepare a student to take the state test for certification as a Nursing Assistant.
Students can enter the program in August. This is a Full-Time program.
PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN

This program is to prepare students as advanced allied health assistants. Building on the Patient Care Assistant program and the specific skills required of caregivers in the nursing home, home health and hospital setting, the student will develop skills in phlebotomy, EKG aide and EKG monitor technician. As an EKG aide, the student will have an understanding of the cardiovascular system, identify legal and ethical responsibilities of the EKG aide and demonstrate knowledge of medical instrumentation in performing electrocardiograph recordings. The EKG monitor tech will be able to include skills of identifying abnormal cardiac rhythms and understanding of more complicated testing modalities. Upon completion, a certification is offered through the National Healthcare Association.

PHLEBOTOMY
Program Length: 165 hours / 16 weeks (Will not be offered until August 2013)
The Phlebotomy program prepares students for employment as phlebotomists (SOC Code 31-9099) and Healthcare Support Workers. The content includes communication, leadership, human relations, and employability skills; performance of safe and efficient work practices in obtaining adequate and correct blood specimens by capillary or venipuncture on adults, children and neonates; maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test to be performed; preparing blood smears; labeling specimens accurately and completely; collecting timed specimens; promoting the comfort and well-being of the patient while performing blood collecting duties; observing safety policies and procedures; medical terminology; emergency procedures including CPR (Heart saver); delivering a variety of clinical specimens to the clinical laboratory; sorting and recording specimens received in the laboratory; centrifuging specimens and preparing aliquots of samples according to the designated protocol; distributing samples to appropriate laboratory sections; and preparing collection trays for specimen procurement. This is an evening program only and is completed in only 4 months.
IV THERAPY CERTIFICATION FOR LPNs
In this 30 hour course, students will learn how to perform venipuncture in relation to inserting peripheral lines for IV therapy. They will be able to discuss legal aspects, various types of IV equipment and recognize adverse reactions to IV therapy. Students will be able to administer IV drugs and to care for patients receiving blood and blood components and parenteral nutrition. They will also be able to manage IV therapy via central lines.
All students must have graduated from a nursing program and show documentation of the same.
Upon completion of the course, each student will receive a certificate with course hours and content.

Once completed, the student will receive an email response within 5 days and must bring a copy to FTI for a financial aid counselor to review and verify.
